Celebrating Our Everyday Heroes This World Book Day

Today at St Albans, our building was bursting with colour, imagination and laughter as staff, children and older people came together to celebrate World Book Day. From fairy-tale characters to superheroes, the costumes were bright, bold and full of joy — but the real magic came from the connections made across generations.

Our staff team truly embraced the fun, dressing up and joining in with the stories, games and shared moments that make days like this unforgettable. Whether reading with children, chatting with older people about the stories they loved growing up, or bringing characters to life through play and conversation, the whole day reminded us of the power of imagination to bring people together.

But here’s the truth:

Our staff don’t need costumes to be superheroes.

Every single day — whether they’re caring for older people in day services, supporting individuals living with dementia, or nurturing our preschool children — our team gives 100%. Their compassion, creativity and commitment shine far brighter than any cape.

They are patient listeners, warm encouragers, skilled professionals and gentle companions. They support people through challenges, celebrate their achievements, and bring moments of joy into everyday life. They make St Albans a place where everyone feels valued, safe and seen.

Everyone is a hero here — they just don’t usually wear capes.

World Book Day gave us the perfect excuse to dress up and share in the fun, but it also reminded us how lucky we are to have such an extraordinary team. Their everyday kindnesses, big and small, make a difference that no costume could ever match.

Thank you to our fantastic staff, our wonderful older people, and our brilliant children for making today so special. Here’s to many more days of joy, creativity and connection at St Albans.
