Elaine Barnes receives award

On Saturday 5th November 2016, St Albans Community Association and Better Understanding of Dementia Sandwell (BUDS) held a joint volunteer awards at Brandhall Labour Club in Oldbury.

Every year staff are asked to nominate the volunteer they felt contributed significantly to the centre to receive the Pat Ryan Volunteer of the Year Award. Nominees are current volunteers of the centre. Staff voted and the unanimous winner was Elaine Barnes.

Elaine initially came to us as a client on the JCP provision we were offering and quickly began volunteering with us on that project. Once that project had finished Elaine began volunteering with us on the Our Friend is Your Friend Befriending project, she has now been with us for nearly two years.

Trip to Coronation Street

Working closely with St Albans Luncheon Club, The Friendship Club aim to alleviate loneliness and isolation and encourage participation in the activities we provide.

The Friendship Club continues to grow from strength to strength. We have held several theme days and trips over the past two years including beach parties, trips to Cadbury World, West Midlands Safari Park and Weston Super Mare.

Every year staff are asked to nominate the volunteer they felt contributed significantly to the centre to receive the Pat Ryan Volunteer of the Year Award. Nominees are current volunteers of the centre. Staff voted and the unanimous winner was Humairaa Khalid.

Humairaa started at St Albans Pre School in September 2012 as a student. Since then Humairaa has continued to volunteer at St Albans Preschool on an average of 30 hours per week. She has become much loved by the staff and children alike.
